I have a very fulfilling life in quarantine...
Since being laid off from work, churches being closed, and other social activities put on hold, my life has been somewhat different. Not too different though. For the most part, I’m a homebody, but I still like to go out and do stuff. I’m involved in Celebrate Recovery, Emmaus community, and Friends of the Library. I play ping pong at the rec center and take Diamond to the dog park. Right now, I’m not able to do any of these things, but I’m trying to make the most of my quarantine life as it is like Andy (Steve Carell) does in The 40-Year-Old Virgin.
Andy insists to his coworker (Paul Rudd) that he has “a very fulfilling life.” The next scenes cut to the different at-home activities of socially awkward Andy. He plays an instrument, paints tiny figures as he talks to them, plays video games, laughs out loud while he reads Mad magazine, performs karaoke in his boxers, repeat. This kind of sounds like me right now, except I’m having difficulty concentrating on my usual hobbies of putting together puzzles, reading, Bible studies, yoga, practicing my ping pong skills, etc.
My stuck-at-home activities (which I normally do anyway) include read devotionals, check email, check in with my Celebrate Recovery leaders’ group on Band app-all on my phone; at the computer, while I’m “working” roughly from 8-1 Monday through Friday, I check Facebook, consider posting something funny (laughter is the best medicine) and something positive (I need to shine my light in the darkness of this world), try not to think about the negativity of the state of this world, then I play online trivia or hidden object games. After so much goofing off, it’s time to focus on my writing projects and review my tutees’ work via email (Even though I’m not at work, I’m still committed to the students I’ve been tutoring since the beginning of the semester). Throughout the day, I text people due to boredom and the need for human communication other than my mom (also working at home). When the weather is nice outside, I take Diamond for a walk (sometimes twice a day). In the evening, I catch up on some TV. Yes, I have a very fulfilling life!
